A guide for parents and teachers

How My Learning Shell Works

My Learning Shell is an AI homework helper for K-8 students that uses the Socratic method — guiding kids to answers through questions, never shortcuts. Here's exactly how it works, and what grown-ups can see.

What Is My Learning Shell?

My Learning Shell is an AI homework helper for K-8 students in Math, Science, and Language Arts/Social Studies. Unlike tools that simply hand over answers, My Learning Shell uses the Socratic method — guiding students through problems with questions and hints so they arrive at the answer themselves. The goal is real understanding, not a shortcut.

The Socratic Method, In Practice

Instead of solving a problem for a student, the tutor asks guiding questions and breaks tasks into small, manageable steps. For example, if a student asks for the answer to a multiplication problem, the tutor might instead ask: “Do you know what 6 x 5 is? That might be a good place to start.” The tutor is designed to never give a final answer directly — even if a student asks repeatedly or tries rephrasing the request. This is intentional: research consistently shows that guided discovery builds stronger, longer-lasting understanding than being told an answer outright.

Age-Appropriate by Design

  • Early Elementary (K-2): Short, simple sentences, encouraging emojis, and phonics or counting-based hints.
  • Upper Elementary (3-5): Clear step-by-step guidance for multiplication, division, and reading comprehension.
  • Middle School (6-8): Proper academic vocabulary (e.g. “variable,” “hypothesis”), always defined simply, with support for multi-step problems and essay structure.

What Parents and Teachers Can See

Transparency is central to how My Learning Shell works. Parents and teachers are never locked out of what their student is doing:

  • Parents can view their own child's full chat history, recent topics, and earned badges through a linked Family Code.
  • Teachers can view chat logs for every student in their classroom (linked via a Classroom Code), spot where students are struggling, and see aggregate trends — like which subjects are generating the most questions classroom-wide.
  • No student data is visible to anyone outside their own linked parent(s) or teacher — there is no cross-visibility between unrelated families or classrooms.

Built-In Safety Net

Homework help is the tutor's job — but if a student's message suggests something is wrong outside of schoolwork (signs of bullying, distress, or a request for help beyond academics), the tutor responds with a brief, caring redirect toward a trusted adult, and the conversation is automatically flagged for the linked parent or teacher to review. The AI does not attempt to counsel students itself — it's a signal to bring in a real person, not a replacement for one.

A Note on Privacy

My Learning Shell is built with children's privacy in mind. Only the information needed to support learning is collected — no unnecessary personal data, no advertising, and no sale of data. Chat messages are sent to our AI language-model providers (currently Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI) to generate tutoring responses, under terms we are confirming prohibit use of student data to train external models. Parent and teacher access is only ever granted through a verified linking code tied to a specific student.
